catherine eugenia finnegan biden. she also went by jean marie finnegan. born on july 7, 1917 to geraldine c. blewitt and ambrose j. finnegan in scranton, pennsylvania.
her ancestry is mostly irish from both parents, and she was a very proud irish catholic. despite being petite and beautiful, she was not to be messed with, she was fierce and loyal. when she was a small child she once punched another little boy in the face after he mocked one of her brothers. i believe catherine was an only girl, multiple older and younger brothers. the oldest, who she adored was ambrose, jr. who sadly went missing over the pacific during ww2 after his plane crashed. she was devastated.
her children were with her, james and francis at the top of the bed rubbing her arms while joe and valerie sat at the bottom rubbing her legs. valerie asked joe to step out, she knew that their mother would “never let him down”, meaning she would hold on so he wouldn't have to see her go, sure enough, a few minutes after joe hesitantly backed into the bathroom, she died. her last moments were an act of love.
throughout this time, catherine had kept her belief in her husband that he'd find his way. she didn't work, staying home with their children. she was their biggest advocate, especially for her “joey” who she encouraged to be confident and stand up against bullies, including bullies who came in the form of teachers. during a reading session joe failed to properly pronounced the word ‘gentleman’ due to his stutter, the teacher who was a nun proceeded to mock him in front of the entire class. while joe had quickly learned that people were cruel and he was viewed as less than for his disability, at home he was never discriminated against, he knew not to take disrespect so he got up and walked all the way back home.

catherine met joseph robinette biden in high school, he was from a wealthy family in baltimore, maryland and his father had moved them to scranton for his work. the two quickly fell in love, she was intrigued by him as he was nothing like the guys she'd grown up around. the couple tied the knot on may 30, 1941 and they welcomed four children in 1942, 1945, 1949 and 1953. after the war ended joseph attempted to start up his own business but a financial partner scammed him, they fell into a short period of poverty and moved in with catherine's parents. by 1953, he'd found new work at a car dealership in wilmington, delaware. they were working class but it was enough to cover most needs and some wants.

catherine, of course, supported joe's political career. she campaigned with him and stayed a familiar face right up until his vice presidency. she passed away on january 8, 2010 aged 92 at her son's home in delaware. she'd had some health problems and a prior fall which broke her hip, it was clear that she missed her husband who'd passed away in his sleep on september 2, 2002 aged 86 after a series of mini strokes.

his mother was furious, she drove him back to school and had it out with the nun, threatening to “rip that bonnet right off your head” if she ever spoke to her son like that again. there are countless stories of her protectivness over her son, she and joseph made sure that their children would succeed in life. career-wise, yes, their education was important but what mattered most was that they were empathetic, courageous people who stood for justice.
